Not to be confused with the well-known writer and politician after whom he was named, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant grew up in Toulouse. Most interestingly, under the influence of Eugène Delacroix and through his time in Tangier (in 1870 and between 1872 and 1873), he became a very talented Orientalist. He liked to depict the interior views, focusing on intimate scenes of the harem which he invented since the space was forbidden to men.
“Venus and Cupid Stealing Honey,” by the German Renaissance painter, Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515-1586), is estimated to fetch between €1 and €1.5 M. This elegant painting belonged to Anatole Demidoff, the son of Nicholas Demidoff who contributed some of his own collection to one of Drouot’s most famous auction sales ever in 1863.

The Petit Palais featured Paul Signac’s “Rotterdam, the Meuse” in the 1934 retrospective. Now, the painting is up for auction almost 100 years after it was first acquired by Edmond Sussfeld. Sussfeld became a prominent businessman and art collector when he first moved to Paris. In 1924, he penned a letter to Signac asking to come to his studio to buy one of his works. The rest is history, as they say.
“Chatons de noisetiers,” which translates to “Hazelnut Tree Kittens” in English, appears at auction this week. The painting illustrates the personal evolution of the French painter Louis Valtat who was a Fauvist – a group of early 20th century modernist artists. Valtat was similarly influenced by the Neo-Impressionists. This painting recalls his style in the 1920s and 1930s: works more intimate in size, composition and form.
The celebrated artist Félix Ziem (1821-1911), who studied at the School of Fine Arts in Dijon, is well-known for his seascapes. François Gérard’s Portrait of a Napoleonic Officer
The elegance of the civil society of the First Empire in France is reflected in François Gérard’s 1808 painting of Charles Ferdinand Théodore de Vassinhac d'Imécourt. The 19-year-old first enlisted in Napoleon’s army in 1805. His career was a promising one; he would later reach the rank of second lieutenant. However, his upwards trajectory was cut short by a stray bullet in April 1807. This fine painting is therefore thought to have been painted posthumously.
