Jean-Michel VOGE - Nubian woman - Once upon a time, in Africa, there was a land called the Kingdom of Kush ruled by Queens, Black Queens. They were clever and powerful and not afraid of the Roman Empire. Their names were Shanakdakhete, Amanirenas, the famous warrior queen Amanishakheto but also her daugher Amanitore (mentionned in the Bible), and after them Amantitere, or Amanikhatashan. How many have heard of this African queens ?
Jean-Michel VOGE - Tadao Ando - All is work is about how to build bridges between nature and architecture through the way in which light can define and create new spatial perceptions, like this cross of light in this particular case. Let’s go to the land of Black Pharaohs, Sudan. Here a man with a young child. I love their incredible beautiful faces. Something timeless and universal at the same time. The only evidence of modernity is the eyewear that the old man is wearing, catching me in the reflection on glasses, proving that at this single moment, just once in our live, we were face to face in the land of Meroe.
Jean-Michel VOGE - India. Working for magazines my whole life, I had the chance to get paid to travel the world. Jean-Michel VOGE - SURMA - The world is not a blank canvas. Every human interaction could change things. It’s the Butterfly effect, small initial perturbations lead to small changes in behavior. So, North American Evangelists devote time, energy and dollars to helping Africans. But religion and nudity are two substances that historically don’t mix in a western cultural ideology that "nude is naughty," and nudity is regarded as sexual.
Jean-Michel VOGE - SURMA - These pictures are primarily to show the essentials, what was absolutely my point of view. And also, removing the decor was in my mind the best way to refuse any kind of ethnographic exoticism, as so often done in many books about Surma, but instead be focused on the absolute respect of the idea that every human has an own identity..That’s the reason why I chose to take my pictures of Surma with a white background, using a simple sheet.
