A French Dream
A young French schoolmaster struggles to cope with the failures of his past. His present is slipping into a soul-destroying grind. He dreams of escape to sun-soaked beaches, azure seas, resplendent skies and a sweetly-scented breeze. But is it all an illusion ? Is it himself he’s running away from ?

A French Escape
When a young French schoolmaster accepts an offer to spend a year teaching in a lycée in a remote corner of Eastern France it’s not just to improve his spoken French and gain a deeper insight into the workings of a foreign culture. He longs to wipe his slate clean of past failures and to escape the entrenchment into which his English life is sinking.
an old stone bridge over a river in the middle of town with buildings on both sides
Le Pont d’Avignon is the oldest bridge in Saint-Claude. Built in the 13th century it owes its name to the fact that it was constructed by specialized bridge-building monks who came from Saint-Bénezet near Avignon in the South. Over the centuries it has been repaired and even reconstructed several times.
