An illustration by Stephan van Calcar in Vesalius’s De Humani Corpus Fabrica [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_humani_corporis_fabrica]. Vesalius grew up near Gallows Hill, an area where criminals were executed and left to rot. As a child, he would look at bodily structures and take bones apart. In his book, published in 1543, offered the first accurate information of human anatomy and began to expose the long-standing mistakes in Galen’s work. It was the first book of its kind as well!

I won't lie, The hard science of human anatomy has been difficult to apply to my soft, right-brained mind for the arts, but my fascination with the artists who created this subject by their beautiful expressions of reality has pulled me through. This image was by one of the world's first anatomists to create a textbook, Andreas Vesalius. He is amazing.
