Madame Carven, petite women's designer, turned 100 years old on August 31, 2009. Only a diminutive 1 metre 55 (five foot one) in her stockinged feet, for half a century she was the favourite designer of petite women. Frustrated by the lack of clothes suitable for small women like herself, Carmen de Tommaso dropped plans to become an architect or interior designer and took the remedy into her own hands. In 1945 she opened her own house under the name Carven.
French couturier and founder of the Carven fashion house, Madame Carven, has died at the age of 105 on June 9, 2015 in Paris. Born Carmen de Tommaso, the iconic designer founded her fashion house in 1945 with the hopes of dressing petite women who mirrored her particularly small frame. The name 'Carven' was created by combining the first half of the designer's name, Carmen, with the surname of her aunt Josy Boyriven, who first introduced her to the world of couture.
