Chevalier de Bayard (1473-1524), the knight above fear and reproach, was widely respected as a paragon of the knightly virtues. He served three French kings in the Italian Wars before, ironically, he was killed by one of the harbingers of non-chivalric warfare--the arquebus.

Pierre Terrail, seigneur de Bayard ((Château Bayard 1473 – Romagnano Sesia 30 April 1524) was a French soldier, known as the Chevalier de Bayard. 1513 - Battle of the Spurs  In 1513, when Henry VIII of England routed the French at the Battle of the Spurs  he was unwilling to surrender, he rode up to an English officer and summoned him to yield; the knight complying, Bayard in turn gave himself up to his prisoner. His gallantry impressed Henry, and the king released him without ransom.
