Margaret Laurence's The Stone Angel is a Canadian classic. It's the story of Hagar Shipley, a 90-year-old woman... She looks back on her life; she contemplates what "old" means...I read this in my 20's, but it moved me deeply...amf. --Highschool

Past Giller Prize winners

The Stone Angel, by Margaret Laurence (adult fiction). Hagar is stubborn, querulous, self-reliant, and, at ninety, with her life nearly behind her, she makes a bold last step towards freedom and independence. As her story unfolds, we are drawn into her past.

The Stone Angel, my first Margaret Laurence book (assigned reading in high school). Should probably reread as I have several close aging relatives.

The Diviners by Margaret Laurence (1974): A Canadian classic and winner of the 1974 Governor General's Literary Award, this sprawling postmodern novel is the memory journey of Morag Gunn, child of the prairie, the iconoclastic daughter of a garbage man. Margaret Laurence's semi-autobiographical tour de force shows up more often on banned-books lists than on must-read lists--which alone is reason to read it.

The Diviners, by Margaret Laurence: I had never read one of Margaret Laurence's books before this one (except her children's book, Jason's Quest). I was blown away. This is why she's one of the greats of Canadian lit.

I think we should all read more Canadian literature and Margaret Laurence is my favorite Canadian author.
