Philippe I, Duke of Orléans  was the youngest son of Louis XIII of France and his wife, Anne of Austria. His older brother was Louis XIV, le roi soleil. Unabashedly effeminate and openly gay, he nonetheless fulfilled his dynastic duty by marrying twice and begetting several children. Through the children of his two marriages, Philippe became an ancestor of most modern-day Roman Catholic royalty, giving him the nickname of "the grandfather of Europe".

Louis Philippe Joseph d'Orléans (13 April 1747 – 6 November 1793) commonly known as Philippe, He actively supported the French Revolution and adopted the name Philippe Égalité, but was nonetheless guillotined during the Reign of Terror. His son Louis-Philippe became King of the French after the July Revolution of 1830.
