David Wilson on Instagram: "Resistance builds strength. For the larger muscles in my body that are already strong (eg. my glutes), I need to add load or resistance to grow even stronger. A nice selection of iron and bands is useful. But I don’t always need equipment to offer resistance. Take what you see here, for example. I’m lighting up those sleepy muscles in the front of my hip by pressing into my thigh with my hands. My task: don’t let my hands push my thigh down even as I ramp up the effort to do just that. Meanwhile my opposite hip, leg and foot are working hard to provide balance and stability. I have to pay close attention to my spine too so that I don’t cheat my strength by rounding or leaning back. And here’s something fascinating. The more I press into the floor with the Muscles, Bands, Instagram, Strength, Glutes, Exercises, Nice, Resistance, Stability

David Wilson on Instagram: "When I think I know something, I stop paying close attention.

There’s a good reason for this. Familiarity frees up my attention to notice less familiar and potentially dangerous things. Astonishing all the ways my body and mind support me without my conscious control.

But when I stop paying attention to familiar movements and sequences, I stop noticing myself within them, quite literally going through the motions instead. I stop learning.

There’s an easy antidote. Make the familiar less familiar.

That’s what I’m doing here. Adding the dowel movement to the squat creates a new squat. And some fresh insights about how my upper body influences my lower body (and vice versa).

I also found a game! Can I coordinate the movement of the dowel and the bending of my Mindfulness, Fresh, Instagram, Upper Body, Going Through The Motions, Control, Insight, Attention, Movement

That’s what I’m doing here.

Changing position, moving at different speeds, adding a distraction with the hands.

And one other thing - counting backward from 100 by 7s.

If I want balance to show up for me within the chaos of losing it, I have to experience chaos in my practice. I need the chaos to learn not to panic, to stay responsive rather than rigid and to react appropriately rather than overcorrecting.

While I can’t avoid chaos, I can learn to manage it. But only by inviting it in.

Here are some ways to add a seasoning of chaos to your movement practice:

🌀change positions
🌀wave your arms around
🌀tilt your head
🌀close your eyes
🌀give yourself a mental problem to solv Instagram, Health Tips, Exercises, Balance, Moving Too Fast, Distractions, Mental Problems, Exercise, Yoga Now
