Leptospirosis is the most common bacterial zoonotic infection that occurs worldwide. It is found mostly in travelers in endemic regions of the world. It is caused by the spirochete Leptospira interrogans. Exposure generally occurs from contaminated freshwater (whitewater rafting in this case) where the spirochete infects through damaged or exposed mucous membranes. The acute phase lasts up to 1 week.
