Part of the Chinese Collection, presenting variations on a pattern of geometric flowers organised in diamond shapes, in assorted textures and colours. The design originated in south-west China, where the Dai people resisted for hundreds of years the influence of the Han rule.

This print is part of the African Collection, which was inspired by a group of undocumented textiles from the north of Ivory Coast. Their graphic and rhythmic mood brought to my mind a vision of Mondrian arriving in New York and hearing Boogie-Woogie music for the first time. Salt Shaker is a mix of linen and cotton in a Panama weave printed with a West African-inspired pattern of vertical bars in chalky white and denim yoked by colourful horizontal bands.

This design was inspired by murals in the Convento Dominico de la Natividad in Tepoztlán, near Mexico City. Dating back to the 16th century, shortly after the Spanish conquest, the convent’s breathtaking murals in sanguine and charcoal seem to contain the whole genealogy of Hispanic ornament, with a Moorish geometry filtered through Spanish Catholicism and rendered in the pigments of the New World.

Pope Clement VI’s private chamber is known as the ‘Deer Room’, and is decorated with enchanting frescoes of courtly hunting scenes dating from the 14th century, the work of unknown hands. In the same spirit, In the Forest turns a room into an environment and unfolds across four panels, allowing the arrangement of cheetahs, parrots and trees in any combination.

Inspired by the illustrations of the 17th-century botanist and entomologist Maria Sybilla Merian, who travelled to Suriname and documented hundreds of species of insects and their food flowers. Onyx is a geometrical pattern of jewel-like scarabs and other insects in emerald green and ultramarine blue on an indigo and charcoal black background.

A kaleidoscopic vision of perpetually mirrored paint smudges. Some chance brush strokes spotted in a mural in Lisbon’s Carmelite convent were the spark that caused this joyful explosion of colours in red and blue, green and yellow, and grey and yellow variations.

For hundreds of years the creation of Pojagi was one of the few ways women could express themselves within a conservative culture. When we began to transform them, however, they conjured the spirit of Gio Ponti, a joyful modernist feeling.
