Texas Rangers make some of the best witnesses for prosecutors, but, to the frustration of historians, their dislike of paperwork is legendary. In 1875, Capt. Leander McNelly sent the following report from Matamoros, Mexico, after pursuing raiding bandits into Mexico.
The Outlaw Cowboys of New Mexico
The outlaw cowboys in this photo are not identified, but some historians believe the man standing is outlaw chief John Kinney, who led a gang of horse thieves and cattle rustlers during the 1870s-80s, all while running his own ranch just west of the Rio Grande.
