In the late 19th century, rich industrials spent their fortune in the constuction of impressive mansions, located in the East Coast of the United States, such as Newport Beach and New York. Those Gilded Age Interiors were inspired by works of art displayed at Universal Expositions. It was the heyday of eclectism and historicism style.

The Cornelius Vanderbilt II Mansion, New York City

When William Henry Vanderbilt, the richest man in the world at the time, died, he left the most of his $200 million estate divided equally between his 2 eldest sons, Cornelius "Corneil" and William "Willie". Cornelius was older than William so Alice, Cornelius's wife, assumed that Cornelius was head of the Vanderbilt family, plus Cornelius had also been given an extra $2 million plus the portrait and marble bust of Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt, objects that had always been given to the…

In a place where million dollar mansions meet the waters edge, the stony shores of the Atlantic forcing cool, effervescent sea breeze into the very deepest crevice of your soul; Newport, Rhode Island was perhaps the most beautiful place Scott and I have vacationed thus far. Of course, to get to Newport, you must cross the Newport Bridge: But once you're there the majestic brick and mortar meet your every architecture loving need. Here, the backside of the Vanderbilt Mansion, The Breakers…

The Elms, Newport My Opinion Happy Friday everyone, today we head, once again, to the former playground of America's royalty, Newport to visit the Elm's. Built to emulate the Chateau d'Asnieres in France, the chateau was the home of the powerful coal family, the Berwind's who were said to be the largest owners of private coal mines in the world. The Elms served as the Berwind's Summer house, a retreat which was used to wine and dine the elite of American society during the time. Mrs Berwind…

The Great Hall of Chateau-sur-Mer was created by architect Richard Morris Hunt during his extensive remodeling of the house in the 1870s, a concept that 20 years later he would incorporate on an even grander scale at The Breakers. The W. A. Salomon Town House 1020 Fifth Avenue & 83rd St.

One of my favorite Fifth Avenue Mansions. A very little known house that, from the outside, looks dull and dreary. The inside, however, is all marble, gilt, crystal and opulence. The layout couldn't be better than a Hollywood movie set of a Fifth Avenue Mansion. It has it all! Mr. Salomon died in 1919, and, after the dispersal of his fine art and antiques collection, the house was demolished in 1924. Today, on the site of 1020 Fifth Avenue is now one of Fifth Avenue's finest apartment…
