Egyptomania is a fashion that occurred in the end of the 18th century and continued in the 19th. This was concomitant to the Neo-Classical period, when every artists were inspired by the antiquity. The Egyptian antiquity was another angle to examine the roots of Western civilisation, according to the Old Testament

Very beautiful antique fire screen attributed to Eugène Piat with Sphinx - Fire screen

This superb antique firescreen is attributed to Eugène Piat, French sculptor and designer from the second half of the 19th century. Made in gilded bronze, this antique fire screen is of absolutely exceptional ornamental richness. The frame is entirely in openwork and topped with a sphinx holding a shield. The middle of the fire screen is adorned with representations of military equipment.
