Griotte marble is named after the Griotte cherry because of its remarkable bright red colour. Griotte marble was used to decorate the royal apartments during the 18th century, predominantly used on fireplace mantels, for example in King Louis XIV's office in Versailles Palace.

19th Century red Griotte marble mantel - Marble

Beautiful antique Regence style mantel made in the nineteenth century. The lintel is the support of a beautiful decoration of three large acanthus leaves and flowers. The corbel shaped jambs are covered with an oak leaf design, while the heads bear acanthus leaves, set at an angle. The use of Red Griotte marble makes this an exceptional piece. This fireplace comes with an antique cast iron insert adapted to this fireplace but without any marble floor. This one could be made to order.

The Red Griotte marble gets its name from the Morello cherry, “griotte” in french, that has an inimitable vivid red color. When the marble contains numerous goniatites (fossilized shells composing the marble) filled with white calcite, it is called “oeil de perdrix” (“partridge eye”).
