A two-of-its-kind bridge in America, the Armour-Swift-Burlington Bridge was constructed in 1909 to allow rail traffic, as well as vehicle traffic, cross the Missouri River—with only the lower rail deck able to raise and allow steam boat passages. The bridge delighted residents of Clay and Jackson Counties that were sick of waiting on the bank for the ferry boat. The ASB Bridge today serves only trains; the car traffic moved over to the Heart of America Bridge in 1987.
Independence - seat of Jackson County in the early 1850s. Independence was also the outfitting point for the Santa Fe Trail, which traversed Jackson County along 2 routes far south of John Calvin McCoys store. McCoy's store would be a border emporium, like a convenience store on some lonely highway today.

The issue of slavery was the national fuse that smoldered in the yrs running up to the Civil War. Two thirds of the 100,000 slaves in MO in the 1850s were held in the counties of Clay, Jackson, Lafayette, Saline, Howard, Calloway and Boone, arrayed along the MO River. In Clay & Jackson counties, farmers believed that only slaves could provide the back-breaking labor necessary to economically raise & harvest tobacco & hemp.
