Lenticular-Shaped-Cloud over Mount-Rainier

Cloud formation atop Mount Rainier, Washington state, a common sight. Loved watching this mountain daily while living in DuPont, as the cloud formations change almost hourly.

These unusual clouds are called lenticular clouds because of their lens-like shape and they tend to form at high altitudes, normally aligned at right-angles to the wind direction. They have often been mistaken for UFOs in the past, due to their odd shape, but they are becoming more common these days. They are indeed another of mother nature’s wonders, truly a sight to behold!

A series of lenticular clouds. As the air comes down the side of the mountain, it tends to overshoot and then springs back up. It oscillates like this for a while, and on the upward part of the waves, clouds form as rising air cools.
