What else can be said about the legendary winner of the Triple Crown? Since 1923, 21 Triple Crown hopefuls have lost at the infamous 1-1/2 mile long Belmont Stakes. At the finish, Secretariat won by 31 lengths and ran the fastest 1½ miles on dirt in history, 2:24 flat, a record that still stands. Chic Anderson said it all while calling the 105th running of the Belmont Stakes, "SECRETARIAT IS WIDENING NOW...HE IS MOVING LIKE A TREMENDOUS MACHINE!"
The June 1973 Belmont Stakes heralded in the coronation of Secretariat as the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. To this day, Secretariat's record race time of flat still stands. His performance and win by 31 lengths was simply awe inspiring.
