French undersea cruiser Surcouf, largest pre-WWII submarine. Captured by the Royal Navy while sheltering at Portsmouth after the fall of France, resulting in deaths on both sides, she was eventually given to the new free french Navy. Trust between the two navies however never recovered from what had happened, and she spent much of her time in America and Canada. She was lost with all hands while making her way to Australia after Japans entry into the war.

Surcouf was a French submarine ordered to be built in December launched on 18 October and commissioned in May Surcouf – named after the French privateer Robert Surcouf – was

15 in Italian battleship Vittorio Veneto at Naples on 23 March 1941, a few days before the Battle of Cape Matapan, where she led the defeated Italian force (three heavy cruisers were sunk by the Royal Navy).  She was seriously damaged by aerial torpedo attack during the battle.
