This type of spur, which originated in the late seventeenth century, continued to be used with blunt rowels for ceremonial or dress wear into the nineteenth century. In 1783, the English antiquary Francis Grose (1731-91) noted of a similar spur that 'it seems calculated for walking in procession, the roundness and bluntness of its mollets preventing its hitching in the robes of the wearer’. These belonged to a Royal Trumpeter
