The Battle between Christians and Moors, 1637–39 // Francisco de Zurbarán (Spanish, 1598–1664) In 1370 the Spanish forces were saved from a night ambush when a miraculous light revealed the hidden Moorish troops. This picture depicting the miraculous event was painted for the apse of the Carthusian monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Defensión in Jerez de la Frontera. It formed part of a large, three-tiered altarpiece which comprised fourteen paintings and additional sculptures.

Francisco de Zurbarán | The Young Virgin, oil on canvas, 1623-33, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. According to medieval legend, Maria lived as a girl in the Temple in Jerusalem, where she devoted herself to praying and sewing vestments. This was a subject particularly popular in Italian and Spanish paintings of the seventeenth century, with the Virgin serving as a model of behaviour for young women.
