Mahakala (Buddhist Protector): this is a very rare version of Mahakala. It is Bernagchen, the special protector of the Karmapa (who appears in the upper let corner wearing his famous black hat) head of the Karma Kamtsang. Above Mahakala is the yidam of the Kargyudpas, Dorje Palmo with Shamarpa in the upper right. The lack of an entourage indicates that this thangka was painted expressly for the purpose of supporting visualization practice.
