I suppose that technically, almost all of the dyeing that I do can be categorized as shibori. Any method of manipulating fabric to create a pattern with the dye is called shibori. But there are many different kinds of shibori.
Kanoko shibori is what is what we usually think of as “tie-dye.” It involves binding sections of cloth to achieve a specific pattern. While traditional shibori techniques involve using thread for binding these days it's common to use rubber bands.
