can be planted anywhere - Liriope muscari variegata - Plants here are happy in practically any light conditions, including dense shade, and will tolerate prolonged dry spells without a whimper. Do NOT plant near grass - invasive.
Golden Japanese Forest Grass - I really cannot get over Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola', zones 5 to My favorite is the variegated variety. I planted mine under a Japanese maple, and the contrast was genius and it has so much movement.
Black Mondo Grass - Sun or deep shade - evergreen - water tolerant - slow growing! A wonderful accent plant, showing up well against pavers or stones or lighter plants. With time, and in rich, moisture-retentive soil, it forms a thick groundcover.
