The island of Sardinia.   Piri Reis was a 16th century Ottoman Admiral famous for his maps and charts collected in his Kitab-ı Bahriye (Book of Navigation), a book which contains detailed information on navigation as well as extremely accurate charts describing the important ports and cities of the Mediterranean Sea.

RED LINE MAP OF NORTH AMERICA, 1782-3, used by British diplomats negotiating an end to the American War of Independence. It's annotated with coloured lines to show where it was thought past treaties established border. When drawing the northern borders, Americans asked for less than expected and later tried to renegotiate. To prevent them from seeing this embarrassing map, it was removed from the British Museum, where it had been since the 1820s and placed in the Foreign Office.
