The mansion on 871 Fifth Ave that Harry Payne and his wife Gertrude Vanderbilt lived in. Gertrude’s parents, the Cornelius Vanderbilt IIs, lived across the street. Harry and Gertrude lived there for quite some time rotating between New York City, "The Reefs" their cottage in Newport and an estate in Old Westbury. In 1907 they sold the mansion to developers who demolished it and built a massive skyscraper that towered over Gertrude's parents home across the street.

The Harry Payne Whitney mansion at 2 West Street was a bit of a hand-me-down for Gertrude and Harry. The house was built in 1875 for millionaire Frederick W. Stevens who commissioned architect George Harney to design a French mansion for him.

A case in point is the townhouse erected at the corner of West 57th Street and Fifth Avenue by Cornelius Vanderbilt II. It was and remains the largest private residence ever built in Manhattan. The Bergdorf Goodman store now stands on the site.
