Moroccan necklace which is made up ("assembled") by using a variety of components - mostly older and recycled. The materials are branch coral (a copious amount of it and of good quality), amber (or an excellent imitation of it), ebony, silver, amethyst, amazonite, and glass - all of which are very typical. Morocco, Draa Valley, Berber people; probably assembled mid 20th c. Height, as shown: 30.5 cm.

A popular type of neckring from the Miao in SW China. The twist for the torc as a whole gives life to what would otherwise be a dull ring, and so do the two spirals at the bottom. The piece is simply locked into position, at the front and bottom, by pushing the hook on the right forwards through the loop on the left. A jewel at once practical and attractive.
