Olive Oatman's family was attacked by Indians as they were travelling by wagon in1850. Olive, then 13, and her younger sister Mary were brought to a village as slaves. A year later Olive and her sister were traded to a more prosperous Mohave tribe. The girls were both tattooed on their chins and arms in keeping with the tribal custom.  Olive's younger sister Mary died at the age of 10. Olive was 19 when was finally traded for blankets and horses and released to an Army outpost.
