The Church of St. George is one of eleven monolithic churches in Lalibela, a city in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Carved from solid red volcanic rock in the century, it is the most well known and last built of the eleven churches in the Lalibela area
World Heritage Rock-Hewn Lalibela is a town in northern Ethiopia that is famous for its monolithic rock-cut churches. Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's holiest cities, second only to Aksum, and is a center of pilgrimage for much of the country.
Lalibela is a small town at an altitude of almost m in the Ethiopian highlands. It is surrounded by a rocky, dry area. Here in the century devout Christians began hewing out the red volcanic rock to create 13 churches.
