Here, at Gardelegen Concentration Camp, the guards panicked as Allied forces drew closer. In an effort to stop the prisoners from escaping or being liberated by the advancing Americans the guards locked a majority of them inside the warehouses and burned them alive. By the time the American Army arrived to the camp, the warehouse was smoking and the majority of prisoners dead.

The Gardelegen Massacre took place on the night of April German SS guards tried to burn between 500 and prisoners to prevent their being liberated by advancing Americans.
