A deeply lovely image from 1894 of a woman hanging Japanese lanterns in a garden. similar design painted onto a tall curved fence in garden.

김홍도의 ‘단원풍속도첩 중 새참’이다.  그림 속의 사람들의 차림새를 보면 일을 하다가 새참을 먹는 중인 것으로 보인다. 왼쪽 하단에 개가 있는데 이 개가 없다고 생각해보면 사람들이 단순히 새참을 먹는 것으로 밖에 안보이지만 개를 넣어서 사람들이 먹고 있는 새참을 더 맛있어 보이게 하는 효과를 보고 있다. 얌전히 앉아서 뭐라도 좀 주기를 바라는 눈초리가 안쓰럽기도 하다. 또한 한국적인 그림에 개를 넣음으로써 과거부터 한국인의 일상에 개가 가까이 해왔다는 것을 알 수 있게 해주는 그림이기도 하다.
