"Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" is probably one of the most famous and widely recognised master pieces of Japanese art. It is a series of wood block print works created by Japanese ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai (1760 - 1849), who travelled around Japan in different seasons to capture the best views of the holy mountain of Fuji. Hokusai applied sophisticated, but yet expressive and playful technique when creating these works. The series is so successful in depicting different faces of Mount Fuji together with the daily life of people living around it. When the series was first released in Japan, it was so popular that made Hokusai to extend the series by additional 10 works (so called "Inner Fuji" as opposing to the 36 previously released works then called "Outer Fuji"). Therefore, please do not be confused by the name "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji", the series in deed comprises of 46 works in total which were believed to be produced by Hokusai in his seventies during the period from 1830 to 1832. Just like many other works of ukiyo-e, the value of Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji was first underestimated when it was debuted, and Japanese people at that time perceived the series as something no more than popular culture and good selling merchandise.
