Shedd Aquarium, Chicago, IL, National Historic Landmark, Photo: Michelle Anderson: On the shore of Lake Michigan, "The Shedd" was the nation's first inland aquarium to maintain a permanent collection of fresh and saltwater aquatic life. John G. Shedd, president of retail giant Marshall Field Company, endowed the institution, which opened in 1930 to provide "instructive entertainment." The handsome marble building has Greek architectural details on the exterior and aquatic decorations inside.
